 An Interesting 100 Rupee Note
All 100 Rupee Banknotes display a serial number at two places, one at the bottom left corner and the other at the top right corner. Both the serial numbers are the same.

But in this sample you will see two different numbers on the banknote. The serial No. in bottom left is 6CN 015950 and the serial No. in top right is 6CN 015951.

Can any reader explain how it occured?

Please see the error Note shown above. On this note the serial number, supposed to be printed at the bottom left corner has shifted to the top left corner. More over the serial numbers are not also same. The seral number at left shows: 4ER 954082 where as the serial number at right shows :  5ER 954082. Both the prefix are not same in this note.

 Another new 1000 rupees Error Note, added to my collection:

 In this error note, you will see two different serial numbers on the banknote. The serial No. in bottom left is 5DA 132333 and the serial No. in top right is 5DA 132334.

    The best error I have ever seen.
    I still find myself unable to understand how it happened this can not happen easily. It looks as if this has intentially been created.

      Thank u very much. This error has not been intentionally done. 3 consecutive notes were discovered by my student, from which he presented me one. This was found in a bundle of 100 notes.

    Might have occured due to Technical error in press or in sotware. Still this reason doesnt satisfy/comply the above error

    The number on the coins are put after the note is printed. This is done by self advancing number printers. Similar to one available with self stamping pads. If one has visited Income tax, you can see that they stamp a serial number and then the number automatically advances.
    This normally works fine, however in some cases the numbers jump 2 places instead of one or does not jump to next number at all. Typically after the printing and cutting process is over, the mint official manually verifies every note to catch this and other type of errors [misaligned cut, missing numbers, etc]. However with the amount to currency being printed, its difficut to catch such errors. Normally on the bundle the officer checks for first and last number to verify it OK.
    Had the numbering run till end of bundle, it would have easily got caught and discarded.

      Your argument seems OK only when the two numbers are close. But I have notes where the two numbers differ by hundreds or thousands.
      Actual mistake is in initial setting of the two number hammers. Some mint employee might not have cared for setting them to same value at the start.
      The RBI man bothers to see that there are only hundred notes in the bundle. He will do it by seeing only the upper right numbers of the topmost and bottommost notes. Very seldom one reads the bottom left numbers. I don't think equality of the two numbers are checked by RBI men.

    Dear friend, a star mark on the number side is not an error. It is just a replacement note and all replacement notes have star mark on the number side.

    recently i got a 500 rupee note of 2012 from a bank in a bundle . on the reverse of this one the colour is blueish but the obverse side colour is as usual. is it an error?

    Hi Beekar, this is Ganesh k. From Cleveland, Ohio, USA. I too collect indian coins and banknotes. Your blog is very well presented and very informative. I rather enjoyed the trip. The premium on US banknote errors is very high, because the quality control at the mints are also very high. I have come across a lot of Indian banknote errors, especially in the 10 rupee denominations .... And they carry a very very small premium, because they are considered very common. The quality control in the Indian mints is lousy to non existent.. as an Indian by birth, it gives me great pain and I feel quite humiliated .... But, let's face it, that's the truth. Good wishes for your success.

    Dear Reader, As it has serial number on bottom left corner but no number on top right corner, its value should be half of the Face value = 50 rs. Just Joking.
    Its a good error note. No fixed price can be told for this note. Price depends upon the condition of the note and also on the buer and the seller.
    One suggestion for u. Why dont u opt to present me with that note. All ur friends and also the readers of this blog will be happy to see ur note, posted on my blog. I assure u to acknowledge ur gift.

    If I find a such note, the very first thought will come in my mind that the note is fake. How to verify if the note is genuine? One of my friend has a twenty rupees not which is perfect from one side. But the other side is totally blank. He was also thinking that the note was fake and keeping that with him, he would face trouble.
